How is your New Year’s resolution going?
Statistically, by the end of January, most people have already left their New Year’s resolutions behind. Did I already give up on mine? No, because I didn’t set any resolutions (LOOPHOLE!).
Seriously though, it’s hard not to fall into the idea of “new year, new me” with some shiny new aspiration for bettering ourselves. The biggest issue with resolutions is that we often set only the outcome and not the process. For example: “I am going to eat healthier”, “I am going to work out more”, or “I am going to get my home in order”. All of those are attainable goals, but not without breaking them into daily habits.
Daily habits aren’t as exciting as the final result though, right? You don’t shout HAPPY NEW YEAR and think “okay, now I am going add a little more protein at breakfast to get the ball rolling.” Or maybe that is literally what you said at the stroke of midnight a few weeks ago, let me know.
The most common thing I hear from a potential new client is “I don’t know where to start” because we are so used to looking at the big picture. I am going to get my home in order is the title of the book, right? Not the chapter. So if your goal was, indeed, to bring a sense of calm to your home, to reduce overwhelm, and to have systems in place for an organized home, lets start with chapter one: Daily Habits.
Unless you have nothing on your agenda and have boundless energy, this is going to be a project built on quick (10-60 minute) decluttering sessions. Choose an area that is small enough for a first project and set a timer based on your availability, if your kitchen junk drawer is driving you bananas, start there! We can get into the nitty gritty of the organizing process in another post, today I want to remind you that just because a goal is big, that does not make it less attainable.
